YEL Insurance

YEL Insurance from Truster

What is YEL — and why is it worth sorting out?

YEL, the entrepreneur's pension insurance, is a statutory insurance that also applies to light entrepreneurs and sole proprietors. It's not just a pension: your confirmed YEL income also determines the level of your sickness allowance, parental allowance and unemployment benefits. YEL is the foundation of an entrepreneur's entire social security — and it costs the same at every insurance company.

Truster works together with Ilmarinen: you submit your application directly in the Truster app, and we take care of the rest. As a light entrepreneur, your YEL payments can be deducted straight from your pay, so there are no separate invoices to remember. If you're transferring your insurance from another provider, you don't need to notify anyone — the information moves automatically between pension providers.

Do note, though: YEL is a personal insurance, so Truster can't take it out on your behalf automatically. You submit the application — we just make it so easy it fits into a coffee break.

What is YEL income?

YEL income isn't the same as your invoicing or your pay. It's an estimate of the monetary value of your work input over a year — in practice, the amount you'd pay someone else to do the same work. Your insurance premium and future pension are calculated from this income figure, and the same number also determines the level of your sickness and parental allowances.

The calculator in the app helps you choose the right level: enter your estimated revenue and get a recommended income figure along with a monthly price — both at the standard rate and with the new entrepreneur discount. You can update your income as your business grows or slows down.

How do I take out YEL insurance?

No — YEL is a personal insurance, so you need to submit the application and activate it yourself. Truster makes applying easy and reminds you when YEL becomes relevant for you.

How do I cancel YEL insurance?

YEL is terminated when your entrepreneurial activity ends or you no longer meet the conditions for mandatory insurance. Contact the pension provider you took out the insurance with — it's a personal insurance.
