Deleting or crediting an invoice

Updated

Sometimes an invoice ends up with an incorrect amount, or is missing necessary information. In these situations, the invoice shouldn't be left open — it must be credited to ensure the accuracy of the bookkeeping.

The way to fix it depends on the invoice's status.

The invoice has NOT been sent

If the invoice is still in draft status, you can delete it. Click the draft invoice and select Delete.

An invoice that's still a draft hasn't yet been sent on to your client, so deleting it leaves no trace in the bookkeeping.

The invoice HAS been sent

If you've already sent the invoice and it has passed our review on its way to your client, the invoice must be credited.

A credit note is created via customer service. Send a message through the Support requests section of the app and let us know that you want to credit an invoice. Please state precisely which invoice it concerns - the due date, amount, and recipient's name are usually enough. However, if you have several invoices with the same details, please specify clearly which invoice it is, so that we can credit the correct invoice promptly and accurately.

At your request, we'll create a credit note for the invoice, which is sent to your client. Your client is then informed that the invoice in question doesn't need to be paid. The credit note creates a negative-amount invoice in your client's bookkeeping that zeroes out the original invoice. This keeps your client's bookkeeping up to date.
