Registering with the Trade Register

What is the Trade Register?

The Trade Register is a publicly viewable list maintained by the Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH). It lets you check information about registered companies.

Do I have to register with the Trade Register?

Not usually, if you're a sole trader (a private business operator) and operate alone without special permits. You can start your business with just a Y-tunnus (Business ID), without this registration, if it isn't mandatory in your case.

When is registration mandatory?

Registration is mandatory for a sole trader only if:

• You hire outside employees.
  • Note: Family members don't count as outside employees.
• Your business requires a special permit.
  • For example, certain healthcare, construction, or restaurant services.
• You have a permanent place of business outside your home.
  • For example, a separate office or shop.

Why would I register voluntarily?

Even if registration isn't mandatory, many people register to protect their business name:

• Name protection: Only a name entered in the Trade Register (e.g. "Matin Maalaus") has exclusive rights. No one else may use the same name.
• Without registration: Your business's official name is simply your own name (e.g. "Meikäläinen Matti").

Cost and practicalities of registering

Cost: 70 € (one-off fee) when you file the notification online

‍Filing: File the notification yourself in the YTJ.fi service.

‍Bookkeeping: Remember to add the 70 € payment receipt to your bookkeeping.

⚠️ Important: When your business ends

If you close your sole trader business, you must also separately remove your Trade Register entry. An active registration obligates you to file a business tax return, even if your business activities have otherwise already ended.
