Who must take out YEL insurance?

It comes as a surprise to many that a light entrepreneur, too, can be liable for YEL insurance. The entrepreneur's pension insurance (YEL) is statutory, meaning mandatory, once certain conditions are met.

You must take out YEL insurance if all of the following apply

• You are 18–68 years old*
• You have worked as a light entrepreneur continuously for at least 4 months
• Your work income (the estimated value of your work input) exceeds 9 423,09 € per year (the 2026 limit)
• You live in Finland

* The insurance obligation ends at the latest at the end of the calendar month in which:

• A person born in 1957 or earlier turns 68
• A person born in 1958-1961 turns 69
• A person born in 1962 or later turns 70
