Why was so much tax deducted?

The tax deducted from your pay is set by your tax card's rate. Tax that feels too high usually comes from one of the following:
- Tax card missing - withholding is 60%.
- Income limit exceeded - the tax card's base-rate income limit is full and the rest is taken at the additional rate.
- Your tax rate is high relative to expectations.
