Why does MyTax show VAT to pay?

A VAT return is always filed only after the period ends, per the Tax Administration's schedule, so the most recent period may show a "missing" status – that period hasn't been declared yet. This is normal, and we handle your returns on time.

We will file your VAT return on your behalf in accordance with your tax period. Based on this return, the amount due - the tax due - will appear on the My Tax Types section of the MyTax homepage. We pay the amount on your behalf a few business days before the due date so that it is correctly allocated to the relevant payment. However, the payment due typically disappears on the business day following the due date.
